The KOMA-Script Collection
KOMA-Script is a collection of LaTeX classes and
packages. The project is hosted at . You can find there also a
Wiki with lots of
information in English and
also in German. Most
importent are the English “How to”
pages and the German
“Wie” pages. Of course,
there is also an issue
tracker for bug reports and
other issues.
The KOMA-Script Classes
Here you can find all classes, which are currently part of the KOMA-Script
collection. Some of them are only internal and should not be used directly by
users. Others have a counterpart standard class. Depending on usage of
third-party-packages, you can replace the corresponding standard class by the
KOMA-Script class. But note: Currently neither KOMA-Script class supports the
usage of \DocumentMetadata or tagging.
scrartcl: The KOMA-Script article class. This can be uses instead of the standard classarticle.scrbook: The KOMA-Script book class. This can be used instead of the standard classbook.scrreprt: The KOMA-Script report class. This can be uses instead of the standard classreport.scrlttr2: The KOMA-Scrpt letter class. The user interface very different from the standard classletter.scrarticle: A wrapper toscrartclbecause several users don’t know how and why to writescrartcl.scrreport: A wrapper toscrreprtbecause several users don’t know and why to writescrreprt.scrletter: A wrapper combiningscrartclwith packagescrletter. It is not fully compatible withscrlttr2, but provides some improvements.koma-script-source-doc: A internal class for source documentation. Users should not use it, because it can be changed incompatibely at any time.scrguide: A internal class used for the user documentation. This class is a real mess grown over the years. You should not use it, because it can be changed incompatible at any time.
The KOMA-Script Packages
Here you can find all packages, which are currently part of the KOMA-Script collection. Some of them are only internal and should not be used directly by users.
scraddr: Reads.adrfiles and allows accessing the fields of the entries.scrbase: Basic functions used by several KOMA-Script classes and packages. Users and other packages authors may find this package usefull too.scrextend: Provides some of the KOMA-Script class features for users of other classes, namely the standard classes.scrfontsizes.sty: Generate font size files to be used with KOMA-Script classes orscrextend.scrjura: Wrapper to make packagecontractcompatible with the deprecatedscrjurapackage.scrkbase: Internal package, that provides features internally used by KOMA-Script classes and KOMA-Script packages. Users and other package authors should not uses these internal features but the officialscrbasefeatures.scrlayer: Provides layers and combines them to page styles. Completes the so called layer page styles by page style aliases.scrlayer-scrpage: Providing easy configurable page styles based onscrlayer. This is an alternative tofancyhdrnot only to be used with KOMA-Script classes but with many other classes too.scrletter: Providing the main features ofscrlttr2as a package that can be combined with others classes, namelyscrartcl, scrreprt, scrbookor the standard classesarticle, report, bookor derived classes.scrlfile: Load file hooks (can be replaced by generic LaTeX hooks).scrlfile-hook: Used byscrlfilewith up-do-date LaTeX kernel.scrlfile-hook-3.34: Used byscrlfilewith old LaTeX kernel, which use a different syntax for generic hooks.scrlfile-patcholdlatex: Used byscrlfilewith old LaTeX kernel, which does not provide generic hooks.scrlogo: Definition of the\KOMAScriptcommand.tocbasic: Provides not only management for auxiliary file extensions like.lof,.lotetc., but also how to write to them and read them, extra floating environments and corresponding non-floating environment, configuration of captions etc.typearea: Calculation of margins and text area based on typographical aspects.
Contributors
Over the decades, a great many people have contributed to KOMA-Script. Some only briefly, others for many years. I’d like to list a few of them here.
Active Developers:
-
Markus Kohm, aka KOMA, is still the maintainer, developer, author of the documentation, point of contact for users, and jack-of-all-trades.
-
Marei Peischl works on the PDF tagging code and on simplifying the code, frequently finding and fixing inconsistencies resp. bugs.
Contributors to the KOMA-Script code:
-
Frank Neukam developed the script style for LaTeX 2.09 in the early 1990s. Large portions of his code were also incorporated into KOMA-Script 2 at the outset. It was not until the reimplementation of KOMA-Script 3 that most of this code was replaced.
-
The LaTeX team developed the LaTeX standard classes and the LaTeX kernel. Modified code snippets from these were also incorporated into KOMA-Script, which is why, for example, derivatives of the classes should never be named
article,book, orreport. -
Based on his
akletterclass, Axel Kielhorn contributed the original letter classscrlettr, which was replaced in 2002 byscrlttr2.
The following people contributed to the KOMA-Script guide:
-
Markus Kohm, the author of today’s guide.
-
Axel Sommerfeldt, who took the original script guide—which I had expanded for KOMA-Script in the late 1990s, with results that were more poor than good—and wrote a new guide that remained in use until the release of KOMA-Script 3.
-
Jens-Uwe Morawski, who wrote the original guide for
scrlttr2.
Translation of the KOMA Script Manual:
-
Gernot Hassenpflug revised and expanded the majority of the current English translation.
-
Harald Bongartz, Georg Granke, Karl Hagen, Melvin Hendrix, Stephan Henning, Jens Hühne, Raimund Kohl, Jens-Uwe Morawski, Krickette Murabayashi, Kevin Pfeiffer, Arndt Schubert, and Jana Schubert have repeatedly revised or rewritten parts of earlier versions of the English translation.
-
Markus Kohm is responsible for the draft version of the English translation, though DeepL has also been a frequent help in recent times.
Other Contributors:
I should really mention all the supporters who have ever helped proofread the manual, reported errors in KOMA-Script or the manual, contributed or tested new ideas, or who simply tried to keep my motivation high—and many more. Since that would go beyond the scope of this text, I’ll limit myself to a few examples of people who have had a formative influence over more than three decades:
-
Torsten Krüger, without whom, among many other things, there would be no
scrlttr2. -
Jens-Uwe Morawski, without whom there would be nothing more than a quick start guide and, in particular, no KOMA-Script book.
-
Elke Schubert, without whom today’s KOMA-Script would have been unthinkable.
-
Heiner Richter and Alexander Willand, who were instrumental in keeping me motivated over the years.
